Origin: I was part of a writing group that met every Tuesday. We would talk for awhile, select a "catalyst" from our discussion, write a short 30-45 minute story using the catalyst in any way, and then read them back. It was a great group! One day Chris selected "Dancing Goats" as the catalyst. We were in a local coffee house and that was his brew of choice. I wrote a short blurb on the "Dancing Goats". The Dancing Goats became a short story and slowly evolved into a book... "The Last Pirate". The original "Dancing Goats": 01-29-2002 Benji could barely make out the map. All he could make out was a couple lines and a couple symbols. The saving grace was… at the bottom of the map it said, “At the sign of the Dancing Goats”. It's amazing what can happen to someone who's luck is on. Ol' lady Crow's dog had died and Benji thought he would be a good boy scout and bury the poor mutt for her. “One or two more scoops should do it”, he said to himself. The next scoop was a clunk! Another couple clunks had revealed a small sturdy ancient looking box with a couple raw nuggets of gold, a prayer, and a map. Trying to make out the map Benji thought to himself, “If only the prayer was impossible to read and the map were clear”. But alas, it was the other way around. “At least I know where the Dancing Goats is”, he muttered. It was obvious that that was the starting point of the trail. Benji pulled the prayer from his pocket thinking that that would be a good way to start the endeavor. The search for gold and riched untold has no beginning or end. Search your heart and if you're smart…. Everyone was finished with their write. I wasn't able to finish the poem in time... that happens. On the way home I couldn't get the plot out of my mind. After awhile it became a short story and just kept growing. It was fun. © Copyright 2004 - Craig Leidy |
